Who else gets excited for the Fourth of July? I usually spend the summer holiday boating off the coast of Connecticut. This activity calls for a travel-friendly snack such as chocolate covered pretzel rods.

This is snack is quick to make and pack for the boat. Plus, red, white and blue sprinkles add a patriotic flare! I easily found these sprinkles (plus more festive items) at my grocery store Stop & Shop.

How to make chocolate covered pretzels

Chocolate covered pretzel rods are one of the simplest desserts. All you need are pretzel rods, chocolate and sprinkles. I found all these ingredients at Stop & Shop.

Tips to melt chocolate

Once you have your ingredients, the first task is to melt the chocolate. There are a few methods for this (such as a double boiler), but since I was short on time I melted the chocolate in the microwave.

Place the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave the chocolate on 50% power level for 2 minutes. Stop the microwave every 30 seconds and stir to ensure even melted. Add more time if necessary.

How to dip chocolate pretzel rods

The easiest way to dip pretzel rods is to transfer the melted chocolate to a tall glass. Then dip the rods straight down and lift up. Allow the chocolate to drip off and tap the pretzel if necessary to remove any excess chocolate.

As you start using more of the chocolate, I suggest tilting the glass to the side so the chocolate works its way up the rod a little further. You can also use a butter knife to spread the chocolate up higher.

Right away add the sprinkles and set the pretzel on wax paper (parchment paper works too). The chocolate should set at room temperature, but you can speed up the process by putting the pretzels in the freezer for 10 minutes.

Fourth of July party prep tips

If you are spending the Fourth either on a boat or at the beach, I have a few ideas to make the holiday easier! My first tip is to head to your grocery store. For my fellow New Englanders, I recommend Stop & Shop

When it comes to boating (and entertaining for that matter), ready-prepped foods are a necessity. Along with my chocolate pretzels, I packed pre-cut watermelon, blueberries, canned seltzer, chips and salsa—all of which I found at Stop & Shop.

Be sure to check out the entertaining aisle while you’re at the store. You will find everything you need for your patriotic party. I came across American flag paper plates, napkins, and cups, as well as sparklers, banners, flags and more!

Pack up all your red, white and blue items (including these pretzel rods) and enjoy your Fourth of July!
