Best Cranberry Apple Pie

INGREDIENTS – Homemade pie crust – Apples –  Frozen cranberries – Fresh orange juice – Orange zest – Granulated sugar – All purpose flour – Ground cinnamon – Ground nutmeg - Salt - Egg - Milk

1. Core, peel and cut apples into 1/4 inch thick slices quickly. Then add apples, orange juice and orange zest to a bowl.

2. Add cranberries, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt to the bowl.

3. Next, use a wooden spoon to combine the ingredients until apples are evenly coated. Leave the cranberry mixture to sit for 15 minutes.

4. Preheat oven to 400° F. Prepare pie crust and add to pie plate. Then add cranberry pie filling to the dough. Discard the juice.

Refrigerate while preparing the lattice top.

5. Roll out second dough then use a pizza cutter to cut thick vertical strips. Lay strips on top of the pie. Fold every other strip as shown.

6. Place horizontal strips of dough and tuck under vertical strips then over the folded vertical strips as shown.

7. Repeat the previous step using the remaining strips.

Then fold in the edges of the bottom crust to make a thick edge crust and flute using your fingers.

8. Add egg and milk to a bowl. Whisk until well combined. Use a pastry brush to brush the egg wash on top of the pie crust and sprinkle with sugar.

Bake for 20 minutes at 400 F and 30-40 minutes at 350 F.

Once the pie is bubbling remove it from the oven. Leave the pie to cool on oven rack for 3-4 hours and serve!
