Twist Candy Cane Sugar Cookies

First, beat the sugar and powdered sugar for about 90 seconds.

This is what the butter should look like.

Next, add the egg, vanilla, and peppermint. Mix until combined.

On low speed, add the flour salt with the mixer.

Mix until just combined. Avoid over mixing the dough.

Remove half of the dough from the mixing bowl and set aside.

Next, add red food coloring to the dough in the bowl. Mix on low speed.

The dough should be red like this. Form each doughs into 1-inch thick discs, wrap separately in plastic, and chill for at least an hour.

Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper. Pinch off some of the dough and roll each piece into a thick rope.

Gently, twist the pieces of the dough together. Transfer to the baking sheet and gently form a hook with the top of the dougn.

Chill the cookie dough for 15 minutes before baking. Preheat the oven to 375°F.  Bake the cookies for 10 to 12 minutes. Allow the cookies to cool on a wire rack.
