25 Days of Baking: Day 7
Froehliche Weihnachten! Today I tried my hand at Pfeffernüsse cookies, a popular Christmas treat in Germany. My Aunt Carol has perfected these cookies and bakes them every year. In an attempt to make mine half as good as hers, I did a little research. Traditional pfeffernusse cookies have ground nuts, spices, and black pepper (Pfeffernüsse translates to pepper nuts). They also contain either anise seeds or anise extract to give it that licorice flavor. In recent years, many recipes omit the nuts and anise. I tried to keep my recipe as traditional as possible by including those ingredients. They turned out pretty well if I do say so myself!
“O Tannenbaum” is the perfect Christmas song to listen to while making these German cookies!

*My pictures don’t include the nuts because I omitted them from this batch. (I’m giving them to a family with a child who has allergies!)
